In 2012 the Organ and Tissue Authority opened a request for tender to provide PR that would drive conversation between Australians around their choice to be an organ donor. Last night, the story was beautifully and respectfully told by the ABC’s Sarah Ferguson and Deb Masters on Four Corners – focusing on three case studies including presenter of ABC’s PM Mark Colvin.
Lying in bed with my wife, the story prompted us to have a chat about our intentions and regardless of our choice to donate or not – we’ve now had the conversation and know what each other’s wishes are.
The timing of the program was beautiful too, as Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing Shayne Neumann announced yesterday morning that Australia’s official organ donor rates have increased to record levels for the first quarter of 2013. This is a great start but still not good enough as Australian rates of organ donation are still far behind what is necessary to cover the need.
A big congratulations to all involved and to anyone who has not spoken with their family about their wishes to donate organs – maybe now is the time to do so. In the meantime, check out the Donate Life website or watch the Four Corners piece.
