Google has finally launched branded pages some 4 months or so after the launch of Google+ for consumers. According to Google SVP of Social Vic Gundotra in a recent blog post , “So far Google+ has focused on connecting people with other people. But we want to make sure you can build relationships with all the things you care about—from local businesses to global brands—so today we’re rolling out Google+ Pages worldwide.”
We’re still in the process of working through the finer details of Google+ Branded pages (expect a follow-up post soon) but in the meantime here are some key outtakes we’ve gathered:
- According to Mashable “Users can add brands such as Fox News, the Dallas Cowboys and Angry Birds to their circles, check out their information and browse their photos. When users add a brand to their circles, it increases that brand’s follower count”
- Pages are directly linked to search: If you want to find a brand on Google+, all you need to do is type “+” in Google Search, followed by the brand you want to follow – simple!
- It’s likely Google Analytics will be plugged into pages giving admins super detailed stats that can really help demonstrate the effectiveness of content and communications
- The use of circles allows for super targeted communication to niche, private groups – this is perfect for heavily regulated industries such as Pharmaceutical companies
So what does this all mean? In a nutshell, we’ll have to wait and see – Google+ user numbers are lower than that of Facebook and the community is dominated by a tech and communications fan base, so whilst brands may be rushing to claim their branded page it’s worth noting that their relevant, engaged, target audience might be some months away…
