A Riff on the Future of the Media

Last week Edelman Melbourne brought together a panel of experts under the banner THE RIFF to discuss a topical issue relevant to the PR profession – the future of the media.

It’s an interesting topic and one that’s constantly being discussed and debated by bloggers and the media itself the world over.

THE RIFF event was our chance to publicly kick-start a conversation about where the media may be headed.

Adding great value to the discussion and sharing their ideas and insights were our panel of speakers (thanks heaps guys!):

MICHAEL SHORT — writer / interviewer / producer — The Zone at The Age
JAMES TUCKERMAN — Founder, Editor-In-Chief at Anthill Magazine
FINN BRADSHAW — Deputy Network Sports Editor at News Ltd

Enjoy these video excerpts (plus vox pops of some of the people who attended the event); if you want to join the discussion on Twitter, we encourage you to do so using the hashtag #EdelRiff.

Thanks to Michael, Finn and James for their thoughts, to Trev Young and the team at Edelman Melbourne for putting this on, and to all who tweeted #EdelRiff so those of us who couldn’t be there were able to follow from afar.

What I took out of this, and what was both scary yet incredibly exciting as a communicator and consumer of media, was the figure that only some 10% of The Age is currently available on the iPad.

Factor in the changing digital skill sets of journalists as content creators across new and traditional platforms, and the speed at which we now consume news and media- the future promises to present an incredible amount of opportunities- not only for the media, but for communications as a profession.

Look forward to catching the next #EdelRiff!
